Orange-tipped Angled-Sulphur (Anteos menippe) (Hübner, 1818)

 

Synonyms: Mancipium menippe, Colias leachiana, Rhodocera menippe metioche, Gonepteryx menippe

 

 

Anteos menippe is found in ecotones along riverbanks and wetlands in lowlands of South America, from Colombia to southeastern Brazil; also in Panama. This is a fairly large butterfly (wingspan 80-90 mm). The upperside is yellow with pale orange wing tips in males; the females are either yellow or pale green. Anteos menippe flies from August to October in Brazil and in June in Colombia. Adults feed on nectar, and males also visit mineral-rich damp sands along riverbanks. The caterpillar host plants are Cassia spp. The images on this page illustrate courtship flight.
